Momentum for Change — Taking Climate Action
As an innovation-driven company we at FRIENDSHIP SYSTEMS constantly strive to reduce emissions and energy consumption. We support our customers in finding truly optimized shapes with CAESES that notably contribute to the yearly reduction of CO2-emissions.
With computational power ever increasing, the accurate performance prediction of virtual prototypes is at the tip of our fingers today. We can set out computers to automatically explore large design spaces in
order to assess hundreds if not thousands of design candidates led by optimization algorithms on their search for the best solution.
At FRIENDSHIP SYSTEMS we have developed, perfected and taught this concept called Simulation-driven Design (SDD) for about twenty years. Our software product CAESES enables engineers from all fields of applications to find those truly optimized shapes that yield
- superior performance,
- maximum efficiency,
- and extended product life,
thus contributing to more sustainability.
It is not only through CAESES itself but also through our research, scientific contribution and teaching that our customers reach a level unprecedented.
Total savings of CO2-emissions by the use of CAESES
We have taken a look at the question how much CO2-emissions are saved from simulation-driven design with CAESES every year.
Each ton of CO2 that is not emitted helps to reduce mankind’s environmental footprint. And we are more than happy to be part of the effort of making our world greener. Therefore, we have decided to participate in the Momentum for Change 2020 initiative to get the chance to win the UN Global Climate Action Award in the Climate Neutral Now focus area.
In 2020 10% or all larger vessels have already been optimized with CAESES.
Our CAESES users manage to reduce CO2-emissions by much more than 1 000 000 tons annually.
Keeping this pace, by2050 total savings in CO2-emissions are estimated at over 100 million tons only considering our work in the maritime industry alone.
Just imagine we gain even more momentum.
Our growing expertise and passion to find truly optimized shapes not only in the maritime industry but also considering turbomachinery, automotive or the aerospace industry, will result in an even bigger number of annual CO2 savings.
The users of our software optimize fans, turbochargers, wings, sails, propellers and many more products, but above all: ships.
Truly Optimized Shapes — Climate Neutral Now
The Climate Neutral Now focus area is an initiative of the United Nations Framework Convention of Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Truly optimizing the shape of ships with the use of CAESES helps approaching the goal of climate neutrality since:
- 90% of consumable goods are shipped.
- Today’s global shipping industry is responsible for the annual emission of more than 1.12 gigatons of CO2.
- A typical container ship consumes about 150 tons of fuel per day. The annual emissions sum up to 100 000 tons of CO2.
Truly optimized shapes with CAESES
FRIENDSHIP SYSTEMS entire CO2 emissions are less than 0.005 % of what the achieved annual savings in global shipping alone compensate for. Conservatively, any single container ship optimized with our software compensates our annual CO2 emissions of 45.15 t every 3 days of operation. With 10% of the global feet of larger vessels being already optimized with CAESES these savings sum up to a considerable amount.
