Create Meta surface based on existing ship hull design

Recommended Posts

Hello,

If I have an existing ship hull design as IGES surface, is it possible to create a meta surface that is same as the original design? If it's possible, can you provide some guidance on the steps that I should follow?

Thank you!

Hi,

yes, this is possible. Please have a look into the tutorials "Yacht Hull" and "Fast Monohull". In order to re-model your import you have to trace typical hull lines, such as flat of side, flat of bottom, waterline and so on. The tracing will most likely introduce some small deviation to your import, but if you take good care of it this should be fine.

Just in case that you are not aware of it, CAESES also offers a partially parametric approach. Using this technique allows you to deform your import directly. Please study therefore the tutorial "Hull Variation" and have a look into the samples in the section "Partially Parametric Modelling".

Both approaches, the fully-parametric and the partially-parametric are really powerful. Whereas the partially-parametric approach allows you to set up a new project quite quickly, the fully-parametric approach takes some more time but also gives more control and flexibility.

If you have further question do not hesitate to ask!

Best regards

Matthias

Hi

Just some inputs on this topic.

Yes. It is possible to recreat the imported ige file. But it is not possible to use only one meta surface to create a ship. For a typical vessel like bulker, tanker, container, a dozen of diifferent meta surfaces are needed. Hence, most times we dont re-model the ship (so-called fully parametric). Usually, like Matthias suggested, partially parametric modelling is used. We can modify the LCB, the bulb length and height, or the skeg shape to reduce the resistance or for a better wake quality,

Just in case you are not aware of it, there is a CAESES users QQ group, 108879537. There are lots of CAESES materials or tutorials in it, both in Chinese and English. And there are already 99 users in this group. Maybe you are already in there.

Regards,

Daniel
